Infrastructure People provided recruitment and talent acquisition support on a hybrid basis, supporting hiring managers with key roles across management, engineering design and delivery, environmental, stakeholder engagement, health, safety and environment, and commercial and corporate functions.

The challenge

Resourcing major projects in a busy state infrastructure market presented several pressures at once. Competition for talent was intense, with a growing number of major projects across the state and nationally drawing on the same limited pool of specialist skills. The sector was also contending with an ageing workforce, as many experienced professionals neared retirement, increasing the urgency of attracting and retaining younger talent to ensure knowledge transfer. Uncertainty around project pipelines and funding added a further deterrent for potential recruits weighing a move.

The approach

We embedded as part of the major construction projects talent team, processing all internal applications and managing internal systems so hiring managers could stay focused on delivery. The engagement also included remobilisation support across the organisation as required, responding to shifts in the project pipeline caused by government decisions on works across the state.

The results

Across a nine-month engagement, and working only two days a week, Infrastructure People placed sixteen positions and supported thirty-one external placements in total, at a cost per hire of $5,574. Throughout, the client retained full visibility of its internal systems and applications while gaining specialist resourcing capacity exactly where it was needed.

Where Infrastructure People fits

Major projects rarely need a fixed block of recruiters; they need capacity that scales up and down with the delivery schedule. A part-time, embedded model gives a program specialist resourcing support and rapid mobilisation without carrying a full internal team through quieter phases, which keeps cost per hire low and delivery on track.

“Infrastructure People became an integral member of our major construction projects talent team. I found them to be proactive, focused and responsible for the recruitment of some outstanding talent to the business.”

– General Manager, Major Construction Projects

On a major airport rail link, a government-owned rail track corporation needed specialist project talent quickly.
